Abstract:

We investigate how the mistakes of professional chess players affect the quality of their further moves in the same game. Using a database of games played by top chess players, Stockfish chess engine evaluations, and an ordered probit regression analysis, we found clear evidence that small inaccuracies lead to less accurate play in future, while more severe mistakes have a weaker effect on the quality of play in the same direction.
